NY Governor Cuomo Comments on Education Commissioner Controversy

Capital New York // October 24, 2013

New York State Education Commissioner John King has recently been criticized for canceling town hall meetings with parents after one earlier this month got out of hand. King was speaking to parents in Poughkeepsie when they became frustrated with his discussion of Common Core standards and testing.

As reported by Capital New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo said parent frustration was a reflection of the changes taking place, but declined to weigh in on calls for King’s resignation:

“No, I don't think (King) should resign,” Cuomo told reporters Wednesday after a briefing on the state's recovery from Hurricane Sandy. “I don't think it's my place to say if he should resign or if he should stay. I don't appoint him, as you know. It's not my place.”

The state Education Department is not under Cuomo's purview in the same way that other agencies are; the Board of Regents elects the commissioner.
