STATEMENT: StudentsFirstNY Acting Executive Director Glen Weiner Reacts to UFT's Education Platform

"While everyone agrees that there is much work left to be done to get New York City schools where they need to be, moving backwards is not the way to get ahead."

Today, StudentsFirstNY Acting Executive Director Glen Weiner released the following statement:

"This weekend's UFT conference offered a clear vision of where Mike Mulgrew would like to take education over the next four years; it wasn't a pretty picture.

"While everyone agrees that there is much work left to be done to get New York City schools where they need to be, moving backwards is not the way to get ahead.

"Instead, we must build on the substantial gains of the last decade, which saw tremendous progress in the city's graduation rate, the rapid expansion of options for parents and a laser-like focus on putting resources where they belong in the classroom.

"Any mayoral candidate who chooses the UFT's platform that would return our city's education system bloated bureaucracy, zero accountability and endless delay of critical reform is sentencing New York City kids to yet another generation of failure."
