New York State is on the verge of pausing the Common Core standards. The moratorium would be a step backwards in improving America’s education system.
According a New York Daily News editorial, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate leaders Dean Skelos and Jeff Klein have joined those who want to halt implementation of the standards for two years.
The editorial discusses why the Common Core standards should not be paused:
Common Core is the only true hope of beginning to fix the chronic failure. That’s not just because it demands more of young people and their teachers, but because of the way it approaches content. No more cursory skimming over dozens of ideas just to check boxes. The new way has students and educators alike taking their time to master the concepts that matter most.
