On Tuesday, several state and local education officials - including State Regents Commissioner Meryl Tisch and United Federation of Teachers (UFT) President Michael Mulgrew - testified on the Common Core curriculum and teacher evaluation implementation. Overall, officials supported the Common Core but were frustrated with the process and its messy rollout last year.
According to Capital New York, StudentsFirstNY held a rally on Broadway outside the hearing to show their support for the Common Core and improving student outcomes:
Across the street, on the west side of Broadway, StudentsFirstNY, the local branch of Michelle Rhee's school-reform group, organized public school parents in favor of the Common Core.
"What the Common Core standards do is send an important message to my kids like my son, they tell him: we believe in you and your potential," said DeWayne Murreld, the father of an eighth-grader in East New York and an organizer for StudentsFirstNY.
