Esta semana 425000 estudiantes del 3ro Al 8vo comenzaron A Tomar Las Pruebas Estatales Estándares. La temporada de exámenes siempre renueva cada año el debate sobre el énfasis de las evaluaciones como medida de éxito tanto de estudiantes como de maestros cada año, este año aun los padres se unieron a una campaña que va en crecimiento optando por que sus hijos no sean examinados. En la New School en Brooklyn, el 95% de los alumnos se salvo de los exámenes. Aunque esta negativa a las pruebas no es de la misma magnitud, en la mayoría de los carteles el movimiento anti-exámenes parece estar en aumento. Una de las grandes quejas de los padres es el nivel de stress de sus hijos.
Pero la situación es un poco mas compleja. Los resultados de las pruebas estatales afectan la evaluación de los maestros y además algunos padres creen que otras materias se están viendo perjudicadas por el tiempo que se dedica a prepara a los estudiantes para los exámenes. Aparte de que las pruebas en teoría son requeridas por el gobierno federal, avivan también las opiniones a favor y en contra del curriculum estudiantil conocido también como common core, en el que se basan estas evaluaciones. Hoy le presentamos ambas caras de la moneda y comenzamos con Milagros Cancel quien es Madre y defiende estos exámenes aunque ninguno de sus hijos esta en estos momentos esta tomando estos exámenes, pero si tiene un hijo que pronto en el Bronx, pronto va a tomar, en un par de años tendrá que tomar este examen. Usted defiende los exámenes totalmente?

Yo defiendo completamente estos exámenes porque estos exámenes son de alta calidad, importante para evaluar el progreso de nuestros niños y también de los profesores para también saber lo que le están enseñando durante todo el año.

Muchos padres, y seguro que usted tiene conversación con otros padres de la escuela de sus hijos, se están quejando del curriculum de common core porque muchos aunque pretenden en lo que intentan ayudar a sus hijos a hacer los deberes y los que les ayudan a aprender en casa, no son capaces porque no lo entienden. Usted ha tenido esa experiencia?

El problema aquí, el hecho que viene viviendo es que si no hay un buen profesor, como los padres que tienen limitaciones vamos a ayudar a nuestros hijos. No importa el nivel académico que tenga cada papa, todos tenemos un rol en esta ciudad. Entonces si hay buenos maestros durante todo el año, nuestros niños van a aprender. Y aquí el problema esta en los maestros, no le estoy tirando a ningún tipo de maestro ni a la unión ni nada. Es simplemente que usted como persona, como maestro, si tiene un sueldo y esta ayudando a nuestros hijos en la escuela durante todo el año se están preparando, no solamente un tiempo. Tienen que enseñarle correctamente sabiendo que en las casas hay padres que tienen limitaciones en el lenguaje u otras áreas o que están trabajando y no pueden enseñar a sus hijos o pagar un tutor. El maestro tiene la obligación, ya que esta durante todo el año yendo a las clases, a enseñarles. Con estos exámenes se demuestra lo que están aprendiendo nuestros niños y al mismo la calidad de profesor que tu eres. En este
momento si tu has visto las noticias pasadas, los maestros que no están adecuadamente calificados, y que han, han pasado unas cosas que no quiero mencionar, demuestran que la Unión de los maestros protegen a esta calidad de maestros, esta calidad de maestros negativos, que afectan que son irresponsables y lo protegen, lo dejan con nuestros niños para que sigan pasando cosas y no les están enseñando.

Usted creo también que conoce o sus hijos van a clase con estudiantes que no son buenos estudiantes o que quizás en sus hogares no le inculcan eso que hay que aprender o hay que estudiar y hacer los deberes. Usted piensa que es justo que a través de estos exámenes tan específicos, los maestros sean evaluados, porque a lo mejor hay muy buenos maestros que hacen todo lo que pueden por enseñar a los niños pero luego los niños viven en un ambiente en casa que no complementa esa educación que se da en las aulas.

Para eso estos exámenes, estos exámenes estándar que hacen todos los años. El niño que no esta aprendiendo, que tenga a un buen profesor, y si va a una escuela que tiene titulo 1, asignan fondos para ayudarle y ayudar al papa también. Entonces aquí el hecho es de no estar hablando de que el examen es bueno o no es bueno, el hecho es la calidad de profesores que tenemos en las escuelas, aunque tu tengas un profesor bueno, hay dos o tres que no están dando las clases y afecta. Pero cuanto piensa usted como madre, por ejemplo, si tuviéramos que hacer un 100 por 100 en un porcentaje. Cuanto piensa usted que el desempeño del estudiante, lo que aprende el estudiante, cuanto tiene que ver la calidad de maestros y cuanto la calidad del hogar de los padres, o sea de que depende, 50% de maestros, 50% de padres, 90% del maestro, 10% de los padres?

En este caso viene siendo mas el maestro porque nosotros como padres tenemos que trabajar y tenemos limitaciones. Entonces en este momento, el error es de los profesionales que están en las escuelas enseñando a nuestros hijos, porque están todo el año con nuestros hijos porque si nuestros hijos tienen asistencia perfecta en la escuela le están enseñando, el error mas importante es el de los maestros. No le estoy tirando a nadie porque en las casas nosotros los padres tenemos limitaciones por las cosas cotidianas que tenemos que hacer a diario. Entonces es importante el error de los maestros, si un maestro no esta preparado o va a perder tiempo en el salón de clases haciendo cosas que no quiero traer, como nuestros niños, como nosotros como padres que tenemos limitaciones van a aprender. El hecho no es que el examen sea bueno o malo, el hecho es que aquí hay profesores que realmente no están calificados y que se necesitan estos exámenes para ayudar a nuestros niños y para evaluar tanto al niño como al profesor la calidad que se esta dando. Estos exámenes son buenos.

This season, 425,000 students from the 3rd to the 8th grade began to take State Standardized Tests. Every year, the exam season always renews the debate about the emphasis of evaluations as a measure of success for both students and teachers. She does however, have a child in the Bronx, who in a couple of years will have to take this test. You defend the tests altogether?

I fully defend these tests because these tests are of high quality, and it is important to assess the progress of our children and teachers, while also knowing what they are teaching throughout the year.

Many parents, and I’m sure you must have had this conversation with other parents, they are complaining about the common core curriculum because many can’t help their children with homework and therefore, can’t help them learn at home. They are unable because they do not understand. Have you had this experience?
Milagros Cancel
The reality is if you don’t have a good teacher, how can you pretend that parents who have limitations will help their children? It doesn’t matter the parents academic level, we all have a role in this city. So if there are good teachers throughout the year, our children will learn. The problem here is the teachers. I’m not dissing anybody, neither teachers nor the union. It’s just that if you, as a person, as a teacher receive a salary and you are helping our kids throughout the whole year, they must be getting prepared. They must teach our kids correctly, knowing that at home parents have limitations, be it language barrier, or other kinds of limitations, or they might work and cannot teach their kids or pay for a tutor. Because the kids are attending class everyday, the teacher has the obligation to teach. With the tests we can see what our kids are learning and at the same time the teacher’s quality. Right now, if you have seen the news, teachers who are not properly qualified and that have done things I do not want to mention, the Teacher’s Union is protecting these kind of people. These are bad quality teachers, who are irresponsible and they protect them. They let things happen to our children and they are not teaching.

I believe that you also know that your kids attend school with students who are not good students or maybe at home they aren’t instilled to study and do homework. Do you think that it’s fair that teachers are evaluated through these very specific tests? There might be very good teachers who do everything they can to teach children but then the children live in a home environment that does not complement the education given in the classroom.

For that reason these tests, these standardized tests are done every year. The child that is not learning and who doesn’t have a good teacher, if you go to a school with Title 1, they allocate funds to help the student and assist the parent as well. So the conversation should not be about if the test is good or bad; the fact is, it is about the quality of the teachers we have in our schools. Even though you have one good teacher, there are two or three that are not teaching at a high quality and it affects the students. We have to see that our children are learning. If we have to .... How much do you think student performance depends on the quality of teachers and how much on the quality of the parental home? Does it depend 50% on teachers, 50% on parents or 90 % on teachers and 10% on parents?

In this case the teacher is still more because we as parents have to work and have limitations. So at this point, the error is on the professionals who are in schools teaching our children, because they are there all year with our children. If our children have perfect attendance at school and are being taught and they don’t do well, the error is on the teacher. I'm not dissing anyone because our households have limitations and everyday we have to do other things as well. How will our children, how will they learn if we as parents have limitations? The fact is not whether the test is good or bad; the fact is that there are teachers who really are not qualified and that these tests are needed to help our children and to evaluate both the child and the teacher quality that we have. These tests are good.
