SFNY Statement: ATR Needs Expiration Date

"The City's experiment with force placing teachers has failed because it's just bad policy. Mayor de Blasio must put an expiration date on the ATR pool and help principals hire the best teachers, rather than force them to take the leftovers," said StudentsFirstNY Executive Director Jenny Sedlis.

Additional background:
StudentsFirstNY has sent three (3) separate information requests about the Absent Teacher Reserve dating back to November 2015. None of the our requests have been fulfilled by the DOE. Here is a brief recap of those requests as well as our many protests and news conferences about the ATR:

  • November 2015: StudentsFirstNY's original ATR FOIL request
  • March 2016: StudentsFirstNY launches campaign demanding answers about ATR
  • June 2016: 500 StudentsFirstNY parents protest ATR at City Hall
  1. July 2017: SFNY Parents protest Mayor de Blasio outside Prospect Park YMCA
  2. July 2017: Filed FOIL regarding teacher vacancies in NYC schools (in an attempt to find where the ATRs would be forced placed)
  3. October 2017: Hundreds of SFNY parents and pastors demand location of forced placed ATR teachers
  4. October 2017: FOIL request about where ATRs have been forced placed
