Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he supported the closure of underperforming schools statewide, which drew criticism from teachers unions. But StudentsFirstNY backed Governor Cuomo's plan and issued the following statement on LoHud.com:
"Those attacking Gov. Cuomo for his recent comments calling for an end to failing schools missed the point. The governor is rightly focused on ways to make sure all students have access to a quality education," the group said in a statement late yesterday.
"Doing so means, that in some instances, we need to replace those schools that fall short with better options. Our children deserve no less. If a child is not getting the education they need to prepare them for college or a career, it's our responsibility to change their trajectory with a high performing school."
